Rosendal
Motel is located in the 35 years old newspaper house of the local
paper "Grenda", which will have its 50-year jubilee in 2001. It
was the newspaper founder Olav Aurvoll from Sunnmøre who came
to Rosendal and started the "Grenda" in 1952. At first in the
basement rooms of Rosendal Gjestgiveri, where the Gjøa Pub is
now, and later in a business building of its own at Malmanger,
where the newspaper still has its offices.
After the death of Olav, it was Knut Hass who took over the role
of the "Grenda" man. Knut held the responsibility as editor and
manager for 20 years until the newspaper was sold at the turn
of the year 1999/2000.
In the year 2000 the local paper will move to Folgefonn Næringshage,
which has been established in the Kvinnherad Ullvarefabrikk, an
over 100 years old wool factory a few hundred yards away.
Since the introduction of computer systems in the production of
newspapers led to less need for space, we started renting out
rooms in 1990 in the 700 sq. metres big house. We have now reached
7 rooms. When the newspaper has moved, our aim is 15 rooms, by
a total rebuilding of the interior of the house.
In the Grenda house there is also a modern hairdressing salon.
Over the years there have been offices for Kvinnherad power supply,
Kvinnherad Social Security office and distribution office of Rosendal
post office, in addition to rooms and equipment for the newspaper
production. Among other things there has been a newspaper press
of our own, and a printing plant for production of ordinary printed
matter. "Grenda" was the first local newspaper in Hordaland to
have its own offset rotary press.
